UK rail travel is expensive relative to many European comparisons, but the railcard system offers a consistent and reliable 33% discount on most fares for anyone who qualifies and remembers to buy one. The railcard costs £30 for a year (or £70 for three years). The break-even point — the point at which savings exceed the card's cost — is reached after a surprisingly small number of journeys.
Break-Even Calculation
At a 33% discount, you need to save £30 in discounts to break even on a one-year card. On a £45 return ticket (London to Birmingham, off-peak), the saving is £15. After two such journeys, the card has paid for itself. On cheaper routes, the break-even requires more journeys, but the point is reached quickly for anyone who travels by train more than a few times a year.
Three-year cards (£70) require saving £70 before paying off. If you are certain of your eligibility for the next three years, the three-year card is almost always better value.
The 16-25 Railcard
Eligibility: Anyone aged 16-25. Full-time students of any age are also eligible.
Cost: £30/year or £70/3 years
Discount: 33% off most rail fares in Great Britain
Restrictions: A minimum fare applies to morning peak travel (before 10am on weekdays) — the discount still applies but there is a floor price.
This is the most widely used railcard and covers the largest age demographic. Students who do not have one are leaving money on the table every term.
The 26-30 Railcard
Eligibility: Anyone aged 26-30
Cost: £30/year
Discount: 33% off most fares
Restrictions: Same morning peak minimum fare as the 16-25 card
Introduced in 2018 to extend railcard coverage to older young adults who were previously excluded. The same 33% saving applies on the same terms.
The Two Together Railcard
Eligibility: Two named people aged 16 or over who travel together
Cost: £30/year
Discount: 33% off fares for both cardholders when travelling together
Restriction: Both named cardholders must travel together. Not valid on morning peak trains (before 10am Monday-Friday).
Excellent value for couples, friends or colleagues who regularly travel together. One card covers two people — effectively £15 per person per year.
The Family & Friends Railcard
Eligibility: For parties of 1-4 adults travelling with 1-4 children (aged 5-15)
Cost: £30/year or £70/3 years
Discount: 33% off for adults, 60% off for children
Restriction: Not valid on morning peak trains
The 60% child discount makes this exceptional value for families. A family of two adults and two children travelling from London to Manchester (off-peak return approximately £140 total without discount) would save around £63 with the card — more than double the card cost in a single journey.
The Senior Railcard
Eligibility: Anyone aged 60 or over
Cost: £30/year or £70/3 years
Discount: 33% off most fares
Restriction: Morning peak minimum fare applies
The Network Railcard
Eligibility: Anyone (no age restriction)
Cost: £30/year
Discount: 33% off fares in the Network Rail area (London and the South East, broadly)
Coverage: Valid on trains within, to and from the Network area; not valid on all UK trains
Useful specifically for regular travel in and around London and the South East. Can be held alongside other railcards for different types of journey.
The Disabled Persons Railcard
Eligibility: People with qualifying disabilities (a range of conditions and circumstances)
Cost: £20/year or £54/3 years
Discount: 33% off for the cardholder and one accompanying adult

Where to Buy
All railcards are available at railcard.co.uk and at staffed train station ticket offices. Digital railcards are stored in the National Rail app and do not require a physical card. Remember to add the railcard to your booking when purchasing tickets — the discount is not applied automatically after purchase.
